PLANT LIFE

September10

Having learnt about Plant Systems answer the following questions to test your knowledge.

Copy the questions into your Science book and answer the following:

  1. What gas do plants need in order to make food?
  2. Where does the Carbon-dioxide that the plant needs come from?
  3. How does the Carbon-dioxide enter the leaf?
  4. What is the formula for Carbon-dioxide gas?
  5. What is the name of the process that causes gases to enter and exit from a leaf?
  6. What is the name of the ‘green’ chemical inside leaves?
  7. What is the name of the process that plants use to make food?
  8. What gas is produced by the leaf?
  9. Whereabouts in the plant is food produced?
  10. What liquid do plants need to make food?
  11. What is the formula for water?
  12. What is the name of the fine tubes that transport water up to the leaves?
  13. Where does water enter the plant?
  14. Plants lose water from their leaves. What is this called?
  15. What happens to plants if they lose too much water?
  16. What can plants close to stop losing too much water on hot days?
  17. What kind of energy do plans use to make food?
  18. Where do plants get the energy they need to make food from?
  19. What chemical inside leaves traps sunlight energy?
  20. What kind of food is produced inside leaves?
  21. What is the name of the sugar that leaves produce?
  22. What three requirements are needed for leaves to make food?
  23. What is the name of the fine tubes the plants use to transport food around?
  24. What waste gas is produced by leaves?
  25. What is the formula for the glucose molecules made by the leaf?
  26. How does the oxygen gas exit from the leaf?
  27. Why are all animals dependent on plants?

PHOTOSYNTHESIS IN PLANTS

Watch this video and discover how plants use light to survive and reproduce.

What do we call the process that plants use to change light energy into food?
What natural elements combine to create this process?
Describe why plant survival is important for insects, birds, animals and humans?
Illustrate the process and label each part of the process clearly.

ELECTRICITY – LIGHT

The students have been learning about electrical circuits and worked in small groups to create a circuit in class. They assisted each other in creating a circuit and enjoyed the experience. Once they had the practice of using the tools to wire the components they were successful in creating their own circuit and used their expertise in assisting others in the group to achieve success. The students also had the opportunity to experience an incursion at school through Monash Sciences and learnt more about different devices and types of electrical circuits. Thereafter, they had to create their own book light and this is what they came up with. It is simple and their own creation.
A great effort by all!

The Human Body and Mind

DIORAMA ON BIOMES
The students independently created dioramas of different biomes.

Biomes have changed and moved many times during the history of life on Earth. More recently, human activities have drastically altered these communities. Thus, conservation and preservation of biomes should be a major concern to all.

Light Incursion

November26

The students attended an hour of Physical Science program delivered by the Monash University Prime SCI! team.
During the presentation students were introduced to the properties of light and colour through activities including bending and reflecting light with torches and mirrors, and exploring the colours of the rainbow.
